KUALA LUMPUR – March 12, 2020: DAP’s Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh has caused a stir in cyberspace after voicing her concern over the appointment of Datuk Siti Zailah Yusoff from PAS as deputy minister of women, family and community affairs.

Yeoh, who held that post in the previous Pakatan Harapan government, expressed concern Siti Zailah’s appointment will have on the national roadmap to combat child marriages, given the previous reluctance by PAS to recognise the problem.

In her tweet, Yeoh said “What will happen to our national road map to fight child marriages with the appointment of MP from PAS as deputy minister of @KPWKM?”

In response, Cally Ting flamed her through Facebook, saying that Yeoh should be ashamed for coming out with such a statement.

“By linking PAS to child marriages, you should not complain when people link DAP to racism,” said retorted.

She then proceeded to question Yeoh on what has been done over the past two years she was in office.

“Come on, since your appointment in 2018, we still don’t see real action,” said Ting.

Isamuddin Isa, in expressing his disappointment, described Yeoh’s remark as nothing more than fear-mongering.

“This is an example of trying to scare the public just because a women from an Islamist party becomes the deputy minister. Let her do her work first, let’s not judge too quick.

“I can’t believe you would stoop this low after losing the governing position YB,” tweeted Isamuddin.

In spite of numerous criticisms against her, Yeoh was defended by many, including one Ahmad Ghaus.

“I support @hannahyeoh ‘s fight against child marriage. It has got nothing to do with religion or race. It is just wrong,” tweeted Ahmad.

Another Twitter user by the name of Clarky said the issues of child marriage transcends religion and should be addressed and that he believes Yeoh should continue speaking up.

“The issues of child marriage shouldn’t be look into the numbers coming from Muslim & non-Muslim communities. Every child, regardless of races & backgrounds should be addressed in this matter. Puan Hannah Yeoh, I hope you have a stronger voice to keep check & balance in the DR (Dewan rakyat),” he tweeted.
