PUTRAJAYA — July 3, 2020: The Court of Appeal has dismissed a stay application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to retain RM192 million of Umno money frozen in its 1MDB investigations.
It also dismissed a similar application involving RM2 million against Wanita MCA, Binsabi Sdn. Bhd. and Perano Sdn. Bhd. Others on the bench were Hadhariah Syed Ismail and Nordin Hassan.
The three-member bench chaired by Yaacob Md. Sam decided that MACC showed no special circumstances that warranted the continuance of the freeze order.
The court noted that MACC had not filed any affidavit to rebut the respondents’ stand that they had the means to return the money should the Court of Appeal reverse the findings of the High Court.
The High Court on June 19 dismissed the government’s application for a stay.
MACC had frozen the bank accounts on the grounds that the money was linked to 1MDB and was given by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
