PUTRAJAYA — Oct. 18, 2018: Umno president and former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) this afternoon and will be charged tomorrow morning in Kuala Lumpur.
Investigators had questioned Zahid four times since July 3, with each session lasting several hours. He was investigated over an allegation that RM800,000 belonging to the Yayasan Akal Budi which he chairs was used to pay off his credit card bills.
MACC made the arrest after obtaining the go-ahead to prosecute from the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
His wife Datin Seri Hamidah Khamis said to reporters that her husband had turned down a suggestion by his lawyer to secure bail so as not to be held overnight in the lock-up.
“The lawyer wanted to get him out but he refused. He will remain here until tomorrow morning…. don’t worry, just pray for him,” she said.
When he was Umno Youth leader in the 90s Zahid was detained for 10 days under the now defunct Internal Security Act.
