KUALA LUMPUR — Dec. 18, 2018: Umno president Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi tonight announced that he’s handing over of powers to his deputy Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, while calling on all polemics on the leadership to cease and for members to focus on strengthening the party.
“In the wake of the crisis faced by the party, I am taking the decision to place the trust in the deputy president to assume the duties of the president,” he said in a statement.
He also asked that there be no more desertions by MPs and assemblymen after this, adding that grassroot members were hoping for the leaders to close ranks in the spirit of the party’s new slogan “Umno Bangkit” (Umno rises again).
Eleven MPs last week quit the party, in Sabah and the peninsular, and voiced their support for the Pakatan Harapan government.
During a live streaming on the Facebook Umno Online, Zahid said Umno now has five camps, one of which comprises hardcore members who do not want the party to ally with any other party.
Of the other four, one wants Umno to ally with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, another for the party to collaborate with PKR, there’s also a pro-PAS camp and an anti-DAP camp.
“In this respect, towards winning the 15th general elections, I accede to the resolution adopted by the heads of Umno’s wings and divisional leaders at their retreat for Umno not to join any party.
“We must play the role of opposition, rebuild our strength and regain our solidarity. As for working with the DAP, we reject it 100 per cent ,” he said in the “Wacana U 3.0:Heart-to-Heart with the Umno president” programme at PWTC tonight. — Bernama
