KLANG — Feb. 2, 2020: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail today appears to contradict a statement by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on Friday on using English to teach science and mathematics in schools.

Although Mahathir clearly stated that the two subjects will again be taught in English like it was for 10 years since 2003, his deputy said a final decision had yet to be made because the matter was still being discussed.

When he announced the policy switch at a meeting with the management group in the Education Ministry which he now temporarily oversees, Mahathir said using English as the medium was in line with the government’s aspiration to encourage its use in the national education system.

English became the medium for teaching maths and science in schools in 2003 during Mahathir’s first tenure as prime minister but this was reversed 10 years later when Datuk Seri Najib Razak was PM.
