Lokman, 45, is from Batu Pahat, Johor.

“We also decided to use the BN symbol in the by-election to ensure that the coalition has to be empowered and remain a party that serves the people,” said BN deputy chairman/Umno deputy president Datuk Mohamad Hasan here today.

Nomination for the by-election is tomorrow.

Mohamad said BN was contesting to gauge the extent of the people’s acceptance of the coalition after the general elections on May 9.

PKR announced last night that it would field Maahad Tahfiz school headmaster Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, 48, to represent Pakatan Harapan.

His candidacy was announced by PKR president Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail during the launch of the party’s election machinery.

The by-election follows the death of PKR assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafie on July 2. Shuhaimi, who was a political secretary to former Selangor mentri besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, won Sungai Kandis on May 9 by 12,480 votes in beating Datuk Kamaruzzaman Johari of BN, Mohd.
