KUALA LUMPUR — September 18, 2017: Umno Youth deputy chief Khairul Azwan Harun has cautioned Malaysians not to believe in empty political vessels.
Specifically, he was referring to comments from opposition politicians on last week’s official working visit by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to the United States.
Citing Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan as an example, Khairul alleged that the former had levelled baseless accusations on the visit.
“He is a tin kosong (empty vessel),” Khairul said in an interview with The Mole.
Khairuddin had recently jabbed at US president Donald Trump for inviting Najib to the White House.
He said Trump was not sensitive to the current situation and by inviting Najib, had bolstered the latter’s image and lessened the impact of the US Department of Justice’s (DOJ) investigation related to the state fund, 1MDB.
Khairul also pointed out that other Pribumi Bersatu leaders, in particular deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, had also similarly accused Najib, while appearing not to understand the dynamics of trade between nations.
Mukhriz had, among others, questioned Najib’s decision during the visit to increase the investments by the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) in the US.
“Does Mukhriz knows how economy works? Or is he just being ignorant and oppose just for the sake of opposing?” asked Khairul.
Azwan referred to last year, when the US imported RM80.2 billion worth of goods from Malaysia while the latter only imported RM55.7 billion worth.
As for the EPF investments, Khairulsaid the returns of interest from abroad last year was at 9.7 per cent, which is more than the local investments’ 6.2 per cent.
During Najib’s visit, it was announced that Malaysia will buy Boeing aircraft worth US$10 billion and that EPF will invest between US$3 billion and US$4 billion in infrastructure development.
