KUALA LUMPUR — Aug. 5, 2020: Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is demanding that those who caused the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim in late November 2018 to be charged with murder.
This is response to a suggestion by police that 12 suspects be charged relating to the rioting outside a Hindu temple in USJ Seafield prior to the incident which led to Adib’s death.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin told the parliament yesterday about the suggestion.
In a statement today Zahid referred to Section 143 of the Penal Code which provides for only a jail term of not more than six months, a fine or both.
“This does not commensurate with the life of a civil servant who has been killed.
“Rightfully, the charge that should be imposed on those involved is an offence related to the crime of murder, as provided in Chapter 16 of the Penal Code, not for illegal assembly,” he said.
Zahid also disagrees with the plan to hold a second inquest, describing it as a waste of time. Doing this would also the justice due to Adib’s family and negate the previous decision of the Shah Alam coroner’s court.
The coroner ruled that Adib died due to injuries inflicted by more than two persons during the riot.
