KUALA LUMPUR — Sept. 14, 2019: Umno and PAS today signed a political cooperation memorandum known as the National Consensus Charter that should see them contest the next general elections based on an electoral pact.
The charter was signed by both party presidents — Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for Umno and Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang for PAS at an event in conjunction with the Himpunan Penyatuan Ummah at the Putra World Trade Centre.
According to Bernama, the charter was then declared official in front of party members who had thronged PWTC by the thousands. Many more were in the streets of the city to show their support for the historic event.
Below are the salient points in the charter:
- Uphold and protect the supremacy of the federal Constitution, which guarantees the formation of the nation, Islam as a federal religion, the sovereignty of the Malay Rulers, the special position of the Malays and the Bumiputeras as well as the interests of other races, Malay as the national language and protecting the interests of a multi-racial society;
2. Strengthening of the national consensus through deliberative practices involving various religious, racial and cultural backgrounds; and
3. Empowering the Islamic, Malay and Bumiputera agendas in relation to the framework of the federal Constitution to develop a peaceful nation.
