KUALA LUMPUR — Feb. 25, 2020: The Umno-PAS Muafakat Nasional alliance and a few other parties prefer Parliament to be dissolved and fresh polls held to resolve the political impasse.
Umno secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa, together with PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, PBRS deputy president Arthur Joseph Kurup and MIC deputy president M. Saravanan, said the group had made this known to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah during their audience at Istana Negara today.
Previously the group had stated their support via statutory declarations for Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad to continue as prime minister, provided the new government excluded the DAP. This support was communicated to the Agong on Sunday.
However, because Mahathir wanted to form a government based on individuals and not parties, they decided to retract the SDs.
Takiyuddin maintained that there was no question of Muafakat Nasional hijacking the Pakatan Harapan government by cooperating with other parties to form a new government.
“”We came in after the PH government collapsed… our purpose was that as MPs from the opposition bloc we had a responsibility to voters to try and make a correction to calm the fluid situation,” he explained.
The Pakatan government collapsed on Sunday after Pribumi Bersatu and 11 PKR MPs quit the coalition.
Mahathir resigned as PM last Monday but was appointed by the Agong as interim PM the same day.
