KUALA LUMPUR — March 5, 2019: Umno and PAS today officially announced their collaboration which will focus on unity of the Muslim community or ummah.
This however does not mean that the two were getting together to form a new party. Instead the collaboration is based on a common stand on issues considered basic to both parties.
“Umno and PAS will take the outcome of the discussion today to their partner parties.
“This collaboration will also not sideline the Malaysian community which is made up of people of different races, religions and cultures,” said Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan after a meeting of a central committee jointly chaired by him and PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
The meeting also discussed the formation of a technical working committee to specifically finalise the kind of collaboration.
In a reaction, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed confidence that the collaboration will not have any effect on his party or the the ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition, reported Bernama.
He pointed out that not all Malays are members of PAS and Umno while PKR has members who are Malays.
According to Anwar, the Pakatan government will continue to fight for the same issues taken up by Umno and PAS especially in ensuring the rights and privileges of the Malays and Islam while protecting the rights of the other races.
