KUALA LUMPUR — December 6, 2019: That Umno has risen from the ashes of defeat and has no interest in regaining power through backdoor intrigues was the theme of Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s policy speech today.

The Umno president said while the “proverbial backdoor has now sprung open”, Umno is only interested in becoming the government through the front door with its allies in Barisan Nasional and Muafakat Nasional, which for now is with Pas.

“We will form the government through democratic means in accordance with the country’s constitution,” said Zahid.

His terse remark was an obvious snub to recently reported attempts by certain Pakatan Harapan leaders to entice Umno parliamentarians to support Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s premiership.

In what seemed to be another reminder for especially his detractors within the party, Zahid stressed that there is only one captain of the ship and that Umno’s voyage must be aided by the crew.

“Remember… If you don’t like what you get, learn to love it. Avoid yourself from being those who cause fractures and divisions. It is better to be a virtuous loser than a wicked winner,” said Zahid .

This is Umno’s second annual general assembly as an opposition party.
