February 2, 2020: Novak Djokovic has won his eight Australian Open singles title and his 17th Grand Slam after overcoming dehydration to beat Austrian Dominic Thiem 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4.
The 32-year-old Djokovic had to call for the doctor twice but recovered well enough to deny Thiem his first major title after twice losing the French Open final.
Thiem held on in the final set but made an unusually high 16 unforced errors as he seemed to be troubled by Djokovic’s returns.
The Serbian later admitted that he was on the brink of losing when dehydration affected his energy levels and his win in Melbourne this evening moves him within three of Swiss Roger Federer’s tally of 20 singles titles and two behind Spain’s Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic will return to the top of the world rankings, replacing Nadal, when they are published on Monday.
