KUALA LUMPUR — May 2, 2019: History has been made with today’s announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office on the appointment of Federal Court judge Datuk Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat as the country’s chief justice effective today.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on the advice of Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and after consulting the Conference of Rulers consented to the appointment based on Clause 1, Article 122B of the federal Constitution.
Tengku Maimun was made a judicial commissioner on October 2, 2006, and a high court judge on September 5 the following year. Her Ladyship was elevated to the Court of Appeal on January 8, 2013.
According to the statement, the date to present the instrument of appointment and swearing in before king will be announced by the office of the chief registrar of the Federal Court upon consent from the king.
Tengku Maimun takes over from Tan Sri Richard Malanjum who retired on April 12 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 66 years plus a 6-month extension.
