KUALA LUMPUR – September 16, 2020 : The idea of Malaysia Day being made the country’s National Day has drawn support from many Malaysians.

Those who responded to The Mole on an article on the matter by Petra Group chairman and group chief executive Datuk Vinod Sekhar expressed their approval of the idea.

Sekhar had written that Malaysians should be brought closer together as they endure the social and economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and that declaring Sept 16 as National Day could help in doing so.

“The independence days of peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah should be observed respectively as significant milestones in colonial dismantling, but Malaysia Day is the day when we should celebrate ourselves as a nation state,” he wrote.

Freelance writers Hania Rafei agreed that the hardship brought about by the pandemic should be a catalyst in further uniting the nation.

“It is a good idea to mark our National Day on Sept 16 as it is the official date of the union of Sabah and Sarawak with Malaya.

“We should share a more common identity regardless from which part of the country we come from,” she said.

Sale administrator Fatin Syafiqah Arof also supported the idea of Malaysians in the peninsular as well as those in Sabah and Sarawak celebrating the day when they were joined as a single nation.

“We are living and building this country together. If the people in Sabah and Sarawak didn’t join us in the peninsular in forming Malaysia, we would not have achieved everything that we have now,” she said.

Junior copywriter Ooi Hui Qi said the idea of having a National Day on Sept 16 would be a boost for a more inclusive Malaysia.

“Sometimes, some of us in the peninsular forgot to include our fellow Malaysians in celebrating our nationhood, which in turn makes them feel less appreciated.

“We, in this part of the country are conditioned to regard Aug 31 as our National Day because it evokes the memories of our founding fathers officiating Merdeka on that day.

“I think maybe it is a perfect time to make new memories on Sept 16,” she said.
