KUALA LUMPUR — Dec. 9, 2019: You may find this a bit too much to believe but former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak gave his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor a watch costing RM466,330.11 from a Chanel boutique in Honolulu for her birthday in December 2014.
But if this sounds like no big deal, consider this: He also spent a whopping RM3,282,734.16 at a jeweller in Sardinia, Italy, in August the same year to buy jewellery as a gift to a wife of a Middle East dignitary.
Najib also spent RM127,017.46 at the Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok in January 2015, which he paid with his credit card, when he was there on a private visit. The spending was for accommodation, for his support staff and other expenses.
He maintained that although he had the right to claim for expenses from the government since he was working during the vacation, he chose not too because he did not want to complicate matters. During the visit Najib met Thai prime minister Prayuth Chan-o-Cha to discuss ways to solve flooding problems.
Najib was making his defence on several counts of misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn. Bhd.
Hearing before Justice Mohd. Nazlan Mohd. Ghazali continues.
