Smuggling of cooking oil still rampant

KUALA LUMPUR — December 20, 2016: Despite the efforts and warnings from the government against the  smuggling of cooking oil, there remain groups that continue with this unlawful activity.

And the smuggling is being done by both locals and foreigners.

In an incident last Friday, the Tawau branch of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt by an Indonesian near Sungai Melayu.

Lieutenant Commander Ahmad Firdaus Shaari said the suspect attempted to smuggle 1,700kg of subsidised cooking oil. A boat was seized.

In view of the situation, the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) has vowed to curb smuggling.

The public may contact 1-800-886-800 to report suspicious activities involving controlled goods or any unauthorised price increase by traders. — Edited from Malaysian Digest/Bernama
