PUTRAJAYA — Aug. 8, 2018: The by-elections for the Seri Setia state seat are to be held simultaneously with that for Balakong, with the nomination on August. 18, early voting on September 4 and polling on Sept. 8.
In announcing this today, Election Commission deputy chairman Tan Sri Othman Mahmood said it had taken into account factors like location, logistics and security.
The last time two by-elections were held simultaneously were for Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar on June 18, 2016.
Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohd. Azizi Mohd. Zain has been appointed the returning officer for Seri Setia, with the PJ Civic Centre to be used as the nomination and vote-tallying centre. Eighteen premises will be used as polling stations.
The by-election follows the death of the Pakatan Harapan assemblyman Professor Shaharuddin Badaruddin of PKR, of colon cancer on Aug 2.
In the general elections on May 9, Shaharuddin won by 19,372 votes, beating Datuk Yusoff HM Hanif of Barisan Nasional, Mohd. Ghazali Daud of PAS and independent candidate Dr S. Vignes. — Bernama
