KUALA LUMPUR — July 27, 2020: The government has repeated its position that the Sedition Act will not be abolished any time soon as it considers the law to be relevant due to the rising incidence of fake news over the years.

In defending this position Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin told Parliament today described the law as particularly important because the country has many racial and religious groups, adding that the law is crucial in curtailing the spread of fake news.

According to the minister, there has been an increase in sedition cases relating to the royalty, race and religion, with 300 cases reported between 2015 and this month.
