KUCHING — Feb. 15, 2018: The Sarawak Chief Minister’s Office has denied a post on social media that cited Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg as purportedly giving an ultimatum to Petronas.

It clarified that Abang Johari has never issued such ultimatum although the onus is on Petronas to comply with the state’s law like any other company with prospecting and mining interests in Sarawak.

“He has always stressed that Sarawak will work alongside Petronas through its newly-formed oil company, Petros, in the oil and gas industry within the ambit of the law and constitution. The fake news is very much regretted,” read the statement issued today.

According to the widely circulated post titled “Ultimatum to Petronas, Get Licence or Get Out”, the CM purportedly issued an ultimatum to Petronas that it must obtain a prospecting licence under the Sarawak Mining Ordinance to operate in the state. — Bernama
