SANDAKAN — April 27, 2019: Five candidates will be contesting in the Parliamentary by-election here, with the DAP’s  Vivian being challenged by Datuk Linda Tsen of PBS and three independents in Chia Siew Yung, Sulaiman Samat and Hamzah Abdullah.

The seat fell vacant after Datuk Stephen Wong of the DAP  died of a heart attack on March 28.

Vivian, who is Wong´s youngest of four children, has a degree in public relations from the University of Murdoch in Australia and has been in politics since 2012.

The local-born was a special assistant to her father when he was Sabah’s health and people’s wellbeing minister and has also been active in social work.

Tsen, a vice-president of PBS, was a two-term MP for Batu Sapi but lost to Datuk Liew Vui Keong, who is currently a Minister in the Prime Minister´s Department, in last year’s May election.

Chia is a businessman, Sulaiman a former administrative assistant while Hamzah is a former founding member of Parti Amanah Negara Sabah.

Early voting is on May 7 and polling on May 11. The Sandakan constituency has 40,131 voters.

Last May Wong defended his seat with a majority of 10,098 votes against Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Lim Ming Hoo. — Bernama
