KUALA LUMPUR – Feb 17, 2017: Organisers of the RUU355 gathering told The Mole today that they are unperturbed by a planned counter-rally to be led by their detractors.

PAS information chief Nasruddin Hassan Tantawi, who is a committee member, made known that they will tolerate the counter-rally as long as it does not get in the way of their own event.

The counter-rally, called Malaysians Reject Hadi’s Bill is planned by a newly formed civil society group, Bebas.

The group is up in arms against the proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act, calling it unconstitutional and disingenuous.

Its leader Azrul Mohd Khalib said the group will demonstrate peacefully at the same time as the RUU355 gathering at Taman Tasik Jaya in Petaling Jaya tomorrow.

Nasruddin said the RUU355 organisers were undeterred, as they believe that everyone has the right to object a notion that they may somehow found unprecedented.

“For us, this is a democratic country and it is okay for them to rally. But, it is hoped that the counter-rally will not infringe the laws and the Constitution.

“It is not wrong for them to disagree with what we (Pas) stand for…it’s their right to oppose. But, they must not obstruct our assembly and the participants.”

Nasruddin stressed that the RUU355 organisers will be cooperating with the police to ensure the safety of participants.

He said the organisers will also deploy about 3,000 volunteer security personnel to assist the police and an additional 1,300 volunteers to maintain cleanliness of the venue.

The event is set to be from 2pm to 11pm and is expected to draw about 200,000 participants.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom will be representing the government at the event.
