KUALA LUMPUR — Jan. 7, 2019: The Malay Rulers will meet on January 24 to elect the country’s 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong and his deputy.
This was decided after this morning’s meeting by the Rulers at Istana Negara which also fixed January 31 for the swearing in.
According to Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, today’s meeting was attended by the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu, Raja Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail, Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak and Sultan Sallehuddin Badlishah of Kedah.
The meeting was convened following the decision of Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan to resign as Agong effective yesterday.
Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang could not attend due to ill health while Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor is overseas.
Syed Danial’s statement said the Rulers took cognisance and respected Sultan Muhammad’s decision.
They also recorded their highest appreciation to Sultan Muhammad for fulfilling the trust placed in his majesty during his tenure from December 13, 2016, till yesterday. — Bernama
