KUALA LUMPUR — December 7, 2017: Most Puteri Umno members believe that the more effective way to capture the hearts of Malaysian youths in the next general elections is to let their actions do the persuading.
“One of our ways to win over young voters is to approach them through the Skuad Puteri Peduli (Puteri Care Squad) programme,” said Rohana Abdul from Bentong today.
The latest edition of the programme was launched last month to help less fortunate young girls, single and young mothers, as well as those with disabled children and low earnings.
“We don’t just do this for the elections, we do this all time,” she said
“As a wing of Umno, it is our responsibility to approach youths irregardless of race and religion and help them in their time of need.”
Nur Shahfura Salem from Tambun prefers to approach youths through fun activities and games.
“I think it’s a better approach to organise games that will appeal more to Malaysian youths.
“Give them prizes if they can win a match against our representative. That way we all have fun and it gives out the message that Umno is not all old and boring,” she said.
When asked about social media as a platform to reach youths, reactions were mixed.
“I don’t fancy the social media approach because there are just too many keyboard warriors,” said Norizam Husin from Ipoh.
“Every time I tried to share good deeds that Umno does, some even started to harass me.”
Rohana however accepts such tactics by pro-opposition keyboard warriors and acknowledges social media as a very effective platform to reach youths.
“Whenever Puteri Umno does something that benefits the rakyat, I share it online to let people know that this is what you (the voters) get by voting us,” she said.
All the Puteri Umno members were interviewed at the Umno annual general assembly being held at PWTC.
