KUALA LUMPUR – February 12, 2020: Today marks the first Proton vehicle launched this year, and it is none other than the critically acclaimed Proton X70 in its much awaited Completely Knocked Down (CKD) form.

The launch event, which was held at Proton’s Crystal showroom in Shah Alam was attended by Proton Holdings Bhd chairman Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar, chief executive of officer Dr Li Chunrong and others from its vendors and showrooms.

The locally assembled units will be produced at the Proton’s RM 1.2b Tanjung Malim plant, which will be the right hand drive production hub of the national car maker’ partner, Geely Holding Group.

“The 2020 Proton X70 is a significant accomplishment for us as it not only represents the first model off the new line but, also because we have matched and exceeded the quality standards of the model we launched 14 months ago,” said Syed Faisal.

There are four variants for these latest batch of Proton X70s and they are the Standard 2WD (RM94,800), Executive 2WD (RM106,800), Premium 2WD (RM119,800) and Premium 2WD X (RM122,800). All variants comes with a free five-year unlimited warranty mileage, five year data package 1GB/month and five times free labour service.

Despite what appeared to be a mere slight price reduction for the batch compared to those sold previously, Proton claims that the value added amounts to more than RM10,000 for each car.

That includes the early bird package where the first 3,000 customers will receive goodies such as an extra 4GB of data a month for five years (worth RM1,740) and an accessories package worth RM2,000 that includes a dash cam, floor mats, magnetic sunshades, door visors, a boot tray and a boot organiser.

There seems to be no noticeable aesthetic upgrades this time round though, meaning that the CKD Proton X70 looks almost similar to the imported version, bar the new Proton logo on the grille.

Besides price reduction that is usually associated with locally assembled vehicles, Proton also managed to include some additional features and important upgrades.

First is the drivetrain, which includes extra torque production in the existing engine (+13nm) coupled with a new 7-speed DCT gearbox which is said to be more efficient and lighter than the outgoing 6-speed conventional automatic gearbox.

The extra 13nm of torque means that the power rating of the 1.8 turbocharged engine is now at 180 horsepower and 300nm of torque. All upgrades in the engine and gearbox are standard to all variant.

Other new features include rear reclining seats as standard, powered tailgate and front seat ventilation from the executive variant onward and foot sensor to go with the powered tailgate in the premium variant.

Other than these new features, it is practically the same as the imported version of which you can read more about it here

It is worth noting that the panoramic sunroof that is present in the Premium version before this has been isolated and offered only in the new Premium X variant. This move is said to be done because some Malaysians prefer to forgo the sunroof due to the country’s hot weather.

“We wanted to ensure our customer’s needs were met with the 2020 Proton X70 and so many of the new features you see are based on what customers felt they wanted. This is critical for us because our success moving forward will be determined by how well we listen to our customers and more importantly, how quickly we can move to meet the demands of the market,” said Dr Li Chunrong,
