SUBANG JAYA – November 3, 2016: The police has formed a taskforce to investigate claims that news portal Malaysiakini is being funded by the billionaire Hungarian-American, George Soros.

The five-men team is headed by Bukit Aman deputy director (CID) Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad.

They are in the midst of investigating reports from the Internet and those conventionally lodged with the police.

“The taskforce is working to determine if Malaysiakini is indeed being funded by Soros,” said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar after a forum here today.

Several suspects have been identified and the police will record their statements soonest possible.

The alleged involvement of Soros with Malaysiakini surfaced recently after whistle-blower website, DC Leaks, released documents claiming that he had been channeling a huge amount of money to finance the news portal.

DC Leaks claimed that the news portal, along with Merdeka Centre and the Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih), were funded by the Soros-linked Open Society Foundation.

Interestingly and significantly, receiving funds from foreign entities per se is not a crime in Malaysia.

Two days ago Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi asked that the claim be investigated as it is imperative for the people to know if outsiders are indeed trying to meddle with local politics.
