KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 2019 : PKR central executive committee member Latheefa Beebi Koya has been appointed the chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) effective June 1 after Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull decided to shorten his contract of service.
A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office today said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, consented to the appointment of Latheefa as the chief commissioner and the application by Mohd Shukri to shorten his contract that was due to expire on May 17, 2020.
“The government is thankful to Mohd Shukri who has served the country well during his term as the MACC chief commissioner,” the statement said.
It also said that the appointment of Latheefa, a lawyer, human rights activist and Lawyers for Liberty executive director, is one of the key reforms in the process of reforming government institutions.
Mohd Shukri served the MACC for 32 years and went on optional retirement as the deputy chief commissioner (operations) on July 31, 2016.
After Pakatan Harapan took over the government following the 14th General Election in May last year, he was appointed the chief commissioner on contract for a two-year period. – Bernama
