KUALA LUMPUR — July 7, 2020: PKR’s Lembah Pantai parliamentarian Fahmi Fadzil is asking Putrajaya to ensure media freedom remains following a decision by police to investigate the Aljazeera news network over a documentary on alleged ill-treatment of illegal immigrants to check the spread of Covid-19.

Fahmi thinks such a move puts pressure on the media and would like Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah to act immediately and give an assurance the government is not against the media and freedom of speech.

In a statement Fahmi said the media needs to be independent, although this does not mean it is free to publish fake news.

He pointed out that there should be a balance requiring the government to understand the functions of the media in monitoring the administration and the people to evaluate information from the government and the media.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Hamid Bador had said that the international news network headquartered in Doha would be investigated for sedition, among others while federal CID chief Huzir Mohamed said Aljazeera would also be investigated for defamation and improper use of facilities, adding that the report was baseless and one-sided.
