KUALA NERUS, Jan 22 2018 : For the first time, Petronas, through the Petronas Muslim Staff Welfare Association (BAKIP), presented RM1.2 million in tithe collection from its staff to be distributed to the poor in the country this year.
Petronas Eastern Region General Manager Mohd Hasnan Abdullah said the money would be distributed to six Petronas regions throughout the country, with each getting RM200,000.
“For the East Coast, it will be distributed to 1,000 recipients through schools and learning centres, including religious schools with each student getting between RM150 and RM200,” he said.
Mohd Hasnan was speaking to reporters after the distribution of the tithe by Terengganu State Assembly Speaker Datuk Mohd Zubir Embong at Insititut Teknologi Petronas (Instep), Batu Rakit here yesterday.
He said the tithe for the east coast states would be divided into three zones, with Zone A comprising Kuala Terengganu, Zone B Kemaman and Dungun and Zone C Kuantan.
He said the distribution for Zone B, involving Dungun and Kemaman, was carried out at the end of last month, while Zone A, which involves Kuala Terengganu, was held today and the event for ,Kuantan, Pahang would be held next week.
He said Petronas, which was set up in 1974, had about 50,000 staff serving throughout the world ,with 7,000 of them currently working in Kertih (Kemaman) and in Instep (Batu Rakit).
Meanwhile, Mohd Zubir said he was touched that even in the current sluggish economy, Petronas was still able to provide tithe.
