KUALA LUMPUR — June 17, 2015: Petronas today presented education aid worth RM100 million under its Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP) to 318 outstanding SPM leavers.

The sponsorship is part of the company’s efforts in supporting Malaysia’s human capital development to help deserving students pursue their tertiary education at top local and foreign universities.

The scholarships were presented by Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and witnessed by Petronas senior vice-president of Group
Human Resource Management Dato’ Raiha Azni Abd Rahman at the International Islamic University Malaysia in Gombak.

Raiha Azni said Petronas hopes to continue nurturing the right talents by giving them opportunities to realise their academic potential.

The students will study petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, geophysics, finance, law and other industry-related courses at universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Some will go to Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Perak.

This year Petronas received more than 10,000 applications for the scholarships.

The company sets stringent selection standards based on merit and including outstanding academic performance and leadership skills.

Since its inception in 1975, PESP has benefited more than 35,000 students with an estimated investment value of RM2.9 billion.

Apart from PESP, Petronas carries out a community outreach initiative that focuses on assisting underprivileged and borderline primary and secondary students to improve their academic achievement under the Program Sentuhan Ilmu Petronas. — Bernama
