IPOH — Aug. 23, 2019: A Perak executive councillor was today charged with raping a 23-year-old woman.

Paul Yong Choo Kiong, 49, the exco for housing, local government, public transport, non-Muslim affairs and new villages, claimed trial for the alleged offence at his house in Meru Desa Park on July 7.

Yong, the DAP’s Tronoh assemblyman, is represented by lawyers Farhan Sapian, Malim Nawar assemblyman Leong Cheok Keng, Bukit Gelugor MP Ram Karpal Singh and Jelutong MP RSN Rayer.

The prosecution is represented by Azhar Mokhtar, Ainul Wardah Shahidan and Naidatul Athirah Azman.

Azhar asked the court to not grant bail for fear Yong may harass a key witness but Ram Karpal Singh disagreed, submitting that the witness was being sheltered at a safe place.

Sessions judge Norashima Khalid set bail of RM15,000 with one surety and set September 24 for case management. — Bernama
