KUALA LUMPUR — July 23, 2020: The Penang South reclamation (PSR) project will not be allowed to continue until its environment management plan has been approved by the Department of Environment.

The plan is one of the 72 main conditions required for approval of the environmental impact assessment, said Environment and Water Minister Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man in a parliament reply to Che Alias Hamid (PAS-Kemaman).

With regard to the PSR, the government had taken note of objections and demonstrations held against it.

The 17-square kilometre project involves the development of three artificial islands of about 1,700-acres in waters off Permatang Damar Laut near Bayan Lepas.

It is being developed to finance other infrastructure projects under the Penang transport master plan.
