GEORGE TOWN — Aug. 7, 2018: The Penang Forum, a coalition of public-interest civil society groups, wants the state government to review the transport master plan project (PTPM) and scrap the Pan Island Link 1 (PIL 1) highway. This is especially so since the contract for the latter hasn’t been signed.
The reason for wanting the highway to be shelved is environmental concern.
Further, independent global bodies like the Institute for Transport and Development Policy and the World Bank should be asked to assess the PTPM in its present form, Bernama quoted the forum’s leader Khoo Salma Nasution as saying.
Khoo and her colleague Dr. Lim Mah Hui were joined by Chant Group advisor Yan Lee, Tanjung Bungah Residents Association chairman Meenakshi Raman, former Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu and former Penang state executive councillor Datuk Kee Phaik Cheen in holding a peaceful demonstration to protest the PIL 1 in front of the State Assembly.
