KUALA LUMPUR — August 26, 2019: All component parties of PAS-led Gagasan Sejahtera have agreed to forge a political cooperation with Umno.

The decision by PAS, Ikatan, Berjasa and Parti Cinta Negara was made at a meeting of the respective parties’ higher-ups in Putrajaya today.

PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said in a statement that the cooperation with Umno was in-line with Gagasan’s other game plans to bolster the pact’s political clout.

“It is a part of our agenda to help save this multiracial country and our effort to woo the support from people of all ages, particularly the youths,” read Hadi’s statement.

Gagasan was formed in August 2016 and it won 18 of the 160 parliament seats in last year’s 14th general election (GE14).

PAS and Umno have been helping each other in their by-election campaigns this year and it has resulted in the Umno-led Barisan Nasional’s recent victories in Cameron Highlands, Semenyih and Rantau.

The two parties will sign an official political cooperation accord on Sept 14, which will likely see some major tactical manoeuvre, including a common symbol that the two parties will use in future elections.

The move by Umno and PAS could potentially improve their chances of winning the 101 parliamentary constituencies with more than 60 per cent Malays and Bumiputera electorates in the next general election.
