SEMENYIH – February 18, 2019: PAS leaders who talked to The Mole today confirmed that their party has not stopped supporting Barisan Nasional in the Semenyih state by-election.
The party’s spiritual leader Datuk Hashim Jasin said the claim by Pakatan Harapan chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that PAS has called off its agreement to help BN may have stemmed from the latter’s misjudgment of what transpired during a meeting with PAS leaders.
He said when the PAS leaders at the meeting told Dr Mahathir that they were willing to support him, what they really meant was that they will do so in his capacity as a prime minister and not as a PH leader.
“We have never shown our support for PH,” added Hashim.
PAS Syura Council secretary Datuk Dr Nik Zawawi Salleh said his party and Umno, which leads BN have made a clear agreement wherein both parties will join forces against PH in the Semenyih by-election and all future elections.
“In the case of Semenyih, we (PAS) will work together with Umno. We have decided that we are going to give solid support to their candidate. Thus, this matter should be viewed without preconceived ideas,” he said.
Zawawi insisted that any statement on the party’s position, including that related to the Semenyih by-election must be officially issued by the Pas leadership.
“Anything of such nature issued by parties apart from PAS is false,” he said.
PAS information chief Nasrudin Hassan said the party’s decision to refrain from contesting in the Semenyih by-election was a clear indication that it intends to maintain solidarity within the opposition rank.
“We are giving way to our friends from Barisan Nasional and Umno as a show of solidarity. We intend to establish good opposition relations as we wish to work with them at the Selangor legislative assembly.
“The claim that PAS is no longer supporting or working with Umno in Semenyih or will not do so in any coming elections is not true. Such a claim does not reflect the reality as Pas is still in collaboration with our opposition friends,” he said.
