LABUAN — Oct. 6, 2017: The Fire and Rescue Department has found that over 40 per cent of the 1, 657 tahfiz or Islamic schools nation-wide do not comply with safety requirements.
The department has a list of 1,666 sekolah agama rakyat, 1, 657 tahfiz centres and 515 sekolah pondok.
“We usually check only registered schools and centres but now we have decided to ensure that all religious schools comply with safety requirements,” said director-general Datuk Wan Mohd. Nor Ibrahim here today after attending an awards presentation ceremony.
A total of 144 notices have been issued to the tahfiz schools on the need for full compliance with the building safety aspects, including electrical wiring and exits. They have six months to comply.
According to Wan Mohd. Nor, the department will submit a full report to the government on October 23, including the recommendations for improvements to these schools.
The checks showed that some did not have fire extinguishers and smoke detectors and the electrical wiring not in good and proper condition. — Bernama
