KUALA LUMPUR — April 16, 2018: The chief executive of 1Malaysia Development Berhad Arul Kanda Kandasamy is being targeted by the big guns in the opposition because of his roadshow of the country to hold town hall meetings.
“Our role is to give the company’s perspective, the story of the events and to give facts. Then people can decide.
“So to me it shows that the opposition is genuinely worried and concerned with the fact that we’re going around sharing information and facts openly, having question-and-answer sessions and allowing anyone to attend,” he said in an interview with Malaysiakini,
Arul was referring to a recent accusation by DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang that he is peddling fake news about 1MDB.
“I think this has destabilised them and they realise that they need to go one step above Tony Pua and get Lim Kit Siang to come out and start attacking Arul Kanda to chip away at the credibility because they are concerned that the message is now getting across.”
The accusation by Lim came after Arul had told Indonesian magazine Tempo that he had no knowledge of businessman Low Taek Jho’s relationship with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak or the latter’s stepson Riza Aziz.
“I was giving a truthful answer to which I had no knowledge of the facts and I refused to speculate. So, I don’t think you can fault me for that,” said Arul.
Lim had also challenged Arul to stand in the general elections on a “1MDB ticket” instead of going on a nationwide roadshow. Arul rejected the challenge and said that he is a professional, not a politician.
Arul, who has spoken at nine sessions so far, said issues related to the company were centred on business but they had been heavily politicised.
“The reality is I am only doing my job and carrying out my professional responsibility, to present information on 1MDB and related topics, based on company records and facts.”
