KUALA LUMPUR – December 12, 2019: National Film Development Corporation (Finas) chairman Datuk Hans Isaac said that he will not step down from his position.

“My appointment was made by the minister. He is the only one with the power to fire me. If he does so, I will respect his decision. I will walk away thinking that we have done the best we could,” said Hans during a media conference held earlier today.

Hans was responding to the demand of several film associations that recently called for his resignation as chairman for “failing to do his job properly.”

The associations were the Professional Film Workers’ Association of Malaysia (Profima), Malaysian Muslim Consumers; Association (PPIM), Persatuan Seniman Malaysia, the Malaysian Digital Creative Industry Association (PIKDM), Komuniti Filem Titiwangsa (Komfit) and the Malaysian Cinematograophers’ Association (MySC).

Hans denied all allegations of unethical behavior, adding that they have been perpetuated by various ‘persatuan’ (association).

“Where do these people their get information? Where are they getting their facts? I don’t know,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, Finas deputy chairman Affendy Ali who was present at the media conference said: “When we talk about all these allegations, let them prove it. It is neither for the board nor Datuk (Hans) to comment.”

“At the end of the day, we are here to ensure that the industry is alive and kicking with integrity and all the initiatives that Finas would like to roll out, especially in 2020”, he added.

Hans came under fire after he was alleged to have “interfered” with the duties of Finas chief executive officer Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nadzri, whose two-year contract as CEO had been cut short to a year.

He also dismissed claims that he brought in “cronies” to sit on the board, which allegedly became the reason for the shortening of the CEO’s tenure.

He reiterated that both of them are on talking terms.

“I have no problems with the CEO. In fact, I spoke to him this morning. He wasn’t able to attend his meeting with the Chief Minister last Monday because he’s taken a leave… so he asked me to attend on his behalf because it’s not easy to arrange an appointment with the Minister,” he said.

On Dec 9, Finas announced their approval on Ahmad Idham’s request to have his term as CEO to be shortened. He would relinquish his post on March 10 next year, instead of March 2021.

Subaidah Md Top, who also attended today’s conference, will serve as the acting CEO of the corporation.
