GEORGE TOWN, Oct 30 2018 : The number of homosexuals and transgenders in the country has increased each year, said the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM),
Senior assistant director of the Social Branch in JAKIM’s Department of Family, Social and Community Dr Mohd Izwan Mohd Yusof said 310,000 homosexual people, especially gays, were recorded this year compared to 173,000 in 2013, which is almost a double increase in five years.
He added that in the case of transgenders, within 20 years, the number of transgenders increased by 200 per cent, with 30,000 this year compared to 10,000 in 1988, most of whom were sex workers.
“This increase could be due to several factors such as openness of the social media today. The younger generation has greater access to the internet and social media.
“This indirectly encourages them to be more open, with access to mobile apps connected to LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) and videos which they should not be watching,” he told reporters after the seminar on Culture and Confusion of Contemporary Lifestyle here yesterday. – Bernama
