KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 2019 : The people of Johor Baru and other parts of the Iskandar Malaysia will soon enjoy a neoteric public transport ride to be known as IMBRT (Iskandar Malaysia Bus Rapid Transit).

Modelled around the successful systems in more than 165 cities around the world, the IMBRT is scheduled for its first phase implementation next year.

Initial planning of the project was started in 2011, as part of the Iskandar Malaysia Transportation Blueprint and it was expected to be fully completed by 2022.

Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda), which initiated the RM2.56 billion project expects it to provide urban mobilisation for 90 per cent of the populated areas of Iskandar Malaysia by 2025.

In a statement to The Mole, Irda said the IMBRT networks will cover the areas of Johor Baru, Kulai, Senai and Pasir Gudang.

The IMBRT will include two types of bus line which are Direct and Feeder routes which connects inter districts as well as Trunk routes lines which will interlude within the town of the district.

The new public transport system will reduce traveling time as IMBRT, unlike normal buses, will have its own designated lanes which are elevated to differentiate its lane from normal roads. This will avoid delays caused by traffic jams and making its time efficient.

“Research by EMBARQ, Social, Environmental and Economic Impacts of Bus Rapid Transit Systems shows that with less cars on the road, BRT can reduce travel time significantly. For instance, BRT users in Istanbul, Turkey, can save 28 days per year by shifting from other transport modes to BRT,” read the Irda’s statement.

Among other cities which have similar system are Boston, Brisbane and Jakarta.

The IMBRT is also designed to be more user friendly for the disabled community as its stations will be equipped with platform level boarding facilities and built-in ramps.

Irda plans to offer a special IMBRT concession ticket price for the disabled, students, senior citizens as well as other ticket products.
