KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 2018 : The run-up to the Umno party elections at the end of this month will not see the creation of ‘camps’ linked to presidential candidates as it is merely a sibling rivalry in an effort to re-empower the party, said vice-presidential candidate, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.

The top contender for the party president post are Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and acting president and former deputy prime minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“Whoever wins will lead Umno, the loser will support the party, that’s the basis of this election,” said Johari, who is Tititwangsa Umno division chief.

He was speaking to reporters after Tengku Razaleigh held a press conference to announce his candidacy for the president’s post here yesterday.

Asked whether his presence at the press conference was reflective of his support for the 81-year-old presidential candidate, Johari denied it, saying that it was at Tengku Razaleigh’s invitation.

“When people invite me, I come. This is my area. My village is here,” said Johari, who was also former  finance deputy minister. – Bernama
