KUALA LUMPUR – May 22, 2018: Two PKR state executive councillors are touted to be the favourites to take over as Selangor mentri besar from Datuk Seri Azmin Ali who has been appointed a federal minister.

Understandably, being close to Azmin gives his possible successor the edge.

One name mentioned is Sungai Tua assemblyman Amiruddin Shari while the other is Seri Setia assemblyman Dr. Shaharuddin Badaruddin but while analysts Dr. Mohd. Azizudin from University Utara Malaysia and Azmi Hassan agree on the link to Azmin, each has a different choice.

Azmi cites two reasons why he thinks Amiruddin is the most likely to get the job.

The first is that Amiruddin is considered as Azmin’s protégé and had been working closely with Azmin for quite some time. The other factor is that Amiruddin has more political experience compared to Shaharuddin.

Azizudin’s pick is Shaharudin because he is older.

“But ultimately the palace would know best when it comes to choosing the new MB,” said Azizudin.

A statement yesterday from the Selangor Sultan’s private secretary Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani stated that Azmin had given a list of potential candidates to replace him.

Azmin has been named Economic Affairs Minister in the new federal Cabinet but will temporarily remain as MB until the successor officially takes over.
