KUALA LUMPUR – March 26, 2018: Two political analysts are of the view that announcing early the list of candidates for the 14th general elections could be beneficial to the Barisan Nasional.

Universiti Teknologi Mara’s (UiTM) Associate Professor Datuk Dr. Ismail Sualman said doing this would allow the candidates more time to also identify the strengths and weaknesses of their opponents.

Ismail said that since interpersonal communication with voters is important, being confirmed early as a candidate would also help in this regard.

“Candidates need to go to the streets and talk to people, especially in the rural areas because the people there do not have much engagement via social media.”

Ismail claimed that some candidates told him they were at a disadvantage in previous elections because their names were announced rather late.

Political and social analyst Dr. Wong Chin Huat agrees with Ismail on the early announcement but Shahbudin Husin, a political commentator known for his anti-BN stance in social media, disagrees.

To him the BN candidates can be sabotaged by opponents if their names are known early since the opposition will have the chance to gather information and have the upper hand.

There have been media speculations on when the list of BN candidates will be revealed but there was an official denial regarding the date. In addition there have also been speculations on when parliament will be dissolved.
