KUALA LUMPUR — July 12, 2019: A senior leader of PAS doesn’t think his party’s cooperation with Umno will be affected by the appointment of former Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak as the chairman of the Barisan Nasional advisory council despite the many cases Najib has to battle in court.

This is because the cooperation is being spearheaded by him and Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, stated PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

“The technical committee is chaired by me and Tok Mat (Mohamad). The cooperation is an inter-party matter. We do not meddle in the affairs of BN and Umno,” Tuan Ibrahim pointed out.

Najib’s appointment was announced on Tuesday by BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, who said this would help the coalition regain the people’s confidence.

Tuan Ibrahim was nonetheless non-committal when asked if Najib’s appointment will bode well for the image of PAS, given the 25 corruption and money-laundering charges Najib is facing.

Umno and PAS, once rivals then partners and then rivals again, called for a truce and formed a partnership some months ago following BN’s defeat in last year’s May general elections.

The cooperation was said to be one reason BN won three by-elections in a row earlier this year.
