KUALA LUMPUR — April 17, 2019: A Bank Negara Malaysia manager denied that he was briefed by some people to not tell the truth in the case involving money from SRC International Sdn. Bhd. by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
When this possibility was put to him, Azizul Adzani Abdul Ghafar, manager of the bank’s Financial Intelligence and Enforcement Department, disagreed with Najib’s counsel Harvinderjit Singh’s suggestion that he was hiding something.
When referred to a police report he lodged after conducting a raid at an Ambank branch on July 6, 2015, Azizul maintained that he knew the report should be true. The report was lodged at the Tun H.S. Lee police station about 34 minutes after he had received the last document from bank manager R. Uma Devi.
Azizul was then asked if by that time he already knew the investigation was being made under Section 4 of Anti-Money Laundering Act, to which he answered he knew based on the documents seized.
Harvinderjit tried to further question Azizul’s credibility by pointing out that he was not the but managed to review the documents in just 34 minutes.
When asked further which of the documents made him come to that conclusion, the officer replied that he could not remember.
Azizul also denied being briefed by others to not tell the truth at the trial and that he was hiding something.
Another witness testified that the search at the Ambank branch was made to investigate an offence under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act.
According to another BNM) manager, Ahmad Farhan Sharifuddin, he was so instructed by the director of Financial intelligence and Enforcement Abdul Rahman Abu Bakar.
Farhan, who is the investigating officer, said he also received a request from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in May 30, 2018, for several documents kept by the central bank.
