JITRA — March 12, 2020: Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir is overly confident that no change is necessary to his state government but other politicians are prepared for any eventuality.
Mukhriz insists that the state will continue to be led by his party Pribumi Bersatu and the Pakatan Harapan coalition, saying that the government will maintain the status quo until the next general elections as agreed by the opposition.
He went to the extent of saying that the opposition leader in Kedah had reached a consensus to maintain the status quo, although at the national level Pribumi Bersatu is no longer with the Pakatan coalition.
But Kedah Umno has not ruled out the possibility of a change in the state government in line with the new federal government under Perikatan Nasional.
Kedah Umno information chief Datuk Suraya Yaacob said that just like what has happened in a few states, Kedah is feeling the effects of the recent political crisis, with people in the state expecting a similar change.
Kedah PAS deputy commissioner 1 and opposition chief Muhammad Sanusi Md. Nor was earlier reported as saying that several state assemblymen from the government bloc were expected to announce their support for Perikatan Nasional in the near future and this could result in a change in the state government.
Currently Umno and PAS have 17 seats compared to Pribumi Bersatu and the Pakatan coalition which have 19.
