KUALA LUMPUR – June 25, 2019: Defense Minister Mohamad Sabu has been flamed online for issuing an official statement against Malaysian Airlines.

The ministry’s press statement yesterday stated that Mohamad, also known as Mat Sabu, had missed an important meeting with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in London on June 15 due to departure delay of two and a half hours.

The statement asked the national carrier not to repeat the incident.

Firdaus Abdullah tweeted how he thought it was unfair of Mat Sabu to issue an official statement to put the national carrier in a bad light.

“This is our flag bearer that you are putting down over something experienced across the board in the industry. Power is a double-edged sword, be careful,” wrote Firdaus.

Azray Zul, through his Twitter account lamented how Mat Sabu should not be selfish over the matter.

“Dear Mat Sabu, aircraft are only allowed to fly when it is safe to fly. Not according to your schedule. Safety first, not only you but also 200+ other passenger and crews. Don’t be selfish,” he said.

Another Twitter user Zainal Azman Abu Kasim expressed his exasperation over the press statement which he described as  “the first of its kind”.

“YB Mat Sabu, 1. Aircrafts fly when it is safe to do so, 2. There are WiFi on the flight where you can inform the PM on the delay,” wrote Zainal.

Malaysia Airlines in an e-mail to The Mole today explained that the Mat Sabu’s flight was delayed to ensure the safety of all passangers in the aircraft, including the defense minister.

“Malaysia Airlines flight MH002 on 15 June 2019 experienced a delay to allow for a last minute rectification required on its A350-900 aircraft operating the flight. The flight that was scheduled to arrive at London-Heathrow Airport at 5.55am on 16 June safely arrived at 8.26am. Safety remains of utmost importance to Malaysia Airlines at all times,” wrote the malaysian Airlines’ e-mail.

The national carrier also apologised to the defense minister for his delayed flight. It stated that efforts were later made to ensured a seamless and swift clearance for alternative flight arrangement to Paris for the Minister’s entourage.
