KUNSHAN — May 15, 2016: Malaysia’s women went down 5-0 to top seeded China in a Group A match of the Uber Cup finals held here today.
Top pair Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei showed a lot of fighting spirit before bowing out to Tang Yuanting/Yu Yang 11-21, 21-14, 18-21 in 56 minutes.
“We controlled the third set and led. However, in the excitement to win the game, we made mistakes and let China’s pair to collect points. When they drew level, we became tense and this cost us the game,” said Vivian.
Malaysia first singles, Tee Jing Yi went down tamely to Li Xuerui 21-13, 21-11 in 32 minutes while world junior champion Goh Jin Wei,16, put up some resistance against world number four player Wang Yihan before losing 16-21, 14-21.
“There is still a big gap between us. This is my first time facing one of the top five players,” said Jin Wei.
The second pair of Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean also failed to deliver the points when they lost to Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei 15-21, 21-19, 11-21.
Malaysia’s third single Soniia Cheah also failed to deliver any point when she too lost tamely to Sun Yu 9-21, 10-21.
Malaysia will next take Denmark in a bid to at least reach the quarter-finals.
Thailand’s girls scored a 4-1 victory over Hong Kong in a Group C match while Indonesia also opened their campaign with a 5-0 win over Bulgaria.
South Korean strolled past USA also 5-0 in Group B while Spain lost to 4-1 to Denmark. — Bernama
