This party will then be part of an opposition coalition with three others

KUALA LUMPUR — July 14, 2016: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad is to form a new political party which will then be part of an opposition coalition targetting to unseat the present Umno-led government.

The former Umno president stated this here today after a three-hour meeting with leaders from the DAP, PKR and Parti Amanah Negara, the three parties that will form the pact with his party. Conspicuously absent was the Islamist party, PAS.

According to Mahathir, he would helm the party he will form.

Amongst those with Mahathir at the meeting and when the announcement was made were Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, a former Umno vice-president who recently resigned from the party, and DAP strongman Lim Kit Siang.

What is clear at the moment is that the soon to be formed coalition has agreed to be a united front to take on the Barisan Nasional government in the next general election.

Mahathir said that his son Datuk Seri Mukhriz, who was previously Kedah mentri besar, and former Umno deputy president and also an ex-deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin are with him on this plan.
