KUALA LUMPUR — March 12, 2019: A civil service that is too large will increase the government’s operating expenditure while reducing the allocations for development.
Thus, if there is no control over the size of the civil service which now has 1.7 million employees, the operating expenditure will take up a huge portion of the country’s budget.
“This will slow down economic growth due to the government’s inability to spend on development projects to generate multiplier effects on economic and social growth,” said Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in the Dewan Rakyat today in reply to Datuk Seri Ismail Mohamed Said (BN-Kuala Krau).
Mahathir said the government felt that the number of civil servants can be reduced without jeopardising the performance, source of income of the officers and employment opportunities. — Bernama
